Considerations for choosing a HUD
The most sophisticated HUDs seem to be CB-HUD Mark III, Dangerous HUD, Vimana, Vimana-X, Xenon & Z-GrOovY MiLHUD.
Clutter
Do you want a good view of everything in space around you? Or do you want lots of dials/MFDs giving you information about the space around you?
Viewscreens vs Windows, Consoles
Do you envisage yourself as looking out a window with a HUD projected onto it? Or as gazing at a viewscreen?
And do you want to see a control console in front of you?
If you prefer windows, the Dangerous HUD is the most extreme example. If you prefer viewscreens, try the Plagiarism HUD.

Cheating
Do you think that the HUD is a cheat? Gnievmir's original Vimana HUD also improves your ship (adds speed, energy, missile slots & cargo capacity, and allows purchase of a super-laser), Deeperspace HUD warns about danger based on the ratio of pirates/Thargoids to police in the entire solar system.

Date Date of latest version of OX - this helps date the generation of the HUD
2010 - Dynamic HUDs appear, switching between Green, Yellow, Red Alert and docked HUDs
2014 - MFDs appear
Big GUI This allows more information to appear on mission screens or Docked screens ("GUIs")
Hull The state of the ship (how urgent is maintenance?)
Reticle A targeting reticle showing when you are on target? (usually needs the purchase of an STE)
MFDs How many MFDs does the HUD support?
Speed Is the speed also given numerically?
Distance Is the distance to the Compass target given numerically?
Joystick Is there an indicator for precision flying with a joystick/controller?
