Average prices are based on long-term established averages (the so-called arithmetic mean). The average quantity is based only on quantity values greater zero. Availability gives a percentage whether a good is available in this system. Please note that these are statistical data. GalCop regulations expressively forbids the broadcasting of actual prices beyond the current system. |
OXPs
Lave OXP
Lave OXP was originally written by Murgh and later edited by Kaks, after Murgh was swallowed up by RL.
This OXP adds all the features to the Lave System that are described in “The Dark Wheel” novella, but weren’t originally there to see in the game.
Learner pilots practice in Trinket ships near the station under the command of an instructor, Restaurant Junks ply their trade, Ad-Droids broadcast Ads, the famous Lave Moon (Basta) is added and more! It also bumps up Lave's tech level (useful for buying kit, and if you run SW Economy, you can now buy medicine there).
Lave is a rich and fabled world, possibly most famous for its vast rain forests, the stormy Paluberion Sea, and the Laveian tree grub. It is also the only system to offer the Space & Interstellar Pilot's Exam. |
Authors: Murgh/Kaks |
This is the first of currently 4 oxps which define Lave!
Very old, originally came out c.2004-2006 before shaders and javascript! Details presumably lost in the Great Deletion.
Note that it is an OXP and needs to be put in the AddOns folder (not an .oxz which would reside in the ManagedAddOns folder!).
Note a number of the newer ambience oxps which add moons, add more moons to the single, solitary Basta of this oxp.
Famous Planets
The Famous Planets OXP adds a custom description of Lave.
On top of that Music is played when exiting the station or coming from hyperspace!
Famous Planets works also in tandem with Lave 1.70.
This is the second of the 4 Lave defining .oxps.
Famous Planets Overhaul: Lave
Stranger has added another custom texture of Lave which meshes with Selevan's description. It uses the new graphics capabilities of Oolite version 1.90. This will be found in the Expansions Manager under FPO Lave in the Ambience selection. See FPO Lave. This is the third of the Lave-defining .oxps.
Lave Academy
The Lave Academy OXP adds an Academy Station to this system. To help in both the training of new recruits, plus the skills maintenance and re-certification of more experienced commanders, a new orbital station equipped to offer training in three key areas - piloting, gunnery and docking - has been built.
Academies
One of Dr Beeb's eight Galactic Navy academies in Galaxy 1 is here at Lave (his naval variant of the Lave Academy).
In Galaxy 1, the former Reortian Empire Academies maintained their reciprocal relationships and use of their respective facilities by each other's alma mater. As would be expected for two (formerly) rich agricultural worlds with similar political systems, sentient species, technology levels, and separated by only 4 light years, the Lave and Reortian Academies enjoyed an ancient academic rivalry.
After the disintegration of the Reortian Empire during the idiotic rule of Supreme Emperor Geou Dibea', Reorte fell into economic decline and a large influx of human colonials displaced the indigenous black felines in this part of the galaxy - notably on Lave. To compound matters further, the newly formed Galactic Cooperative selected Lave over Reorte as the premier site for its flight training school.
- During the last few decades the Lave Academy has become a strong meritocracy, accepting only students whom they regard as having the potential to reach Elite combat status during their subsequent career - irrespective of background. Lave is in fact the oldest Academy in Galaxy 1 and third-oldest in the 8 galaxies. Its sister, or more precisely daughter, academy at Anlere is widely recognized as focusing more on advancing virtual combat simulation.
Monument
This old oxp (see OXPList - Works in Progress list) adds a monument to deceased commanders near the sun (or orbiting Lave depending on other .oxps which might move the sun further away). It is rumoured that it is capable of interaction with visitors. By Dajt (before Feb 2006).
Far Planets
FarPlanets was written by Norby (2014). A suite of 3 OXPs it rewrites Lave to include far-flung planets which you can trade with using souped-up Torus Drives.
Lave is Earth
Lave is Earth 8k was created by Another_Commander to demonstrate the new graphics capabilities of the newer versions of Oolite post v.1.88. This is the last of the Lave-defining .oxps.
This system falls under the responsibility of the Navy Command Station 2 in Orrere. (Galactic Navy OXP)
First Finance OXP
In First Finance OXP, Lave is the home of the Lave First Finance Corp., which lends you the money to buy your ship - and collects repayments through the GalCop Commerce Programme.
Unfinished oxps
Have a look at PS Lave System & PS Lave Lave sites! These pages are part of the unrealised 2009 Planet Scanner oxp which would have built up lore and given life to several solar systems in each of The Eight.
History
Lave is the home of Cowell & MgRath who started making the Cobra Mk. III here almost fifty years ago.
Fiction
The Dark Wheel
The Dark Wheel is a novella by Robert Holdstock. It was included with the original game Elite, and tells us about Lave. Set circa 20 years before Oolite.
The planet Lave, below, rotated in blue-green splendour. There were storms moving across the Paluberion Sea, six great whorls of pink and white cloud. They were approaching the continental mass that was FirstFall, and promising a bleak and wet few days to the swathes of forest and the deep, snaking valleys that cut through the rugged land. The cities of both Humankind and Lavian glittered among the verdant blanket below like bright shards of glass... Lave, like any other planet, was not a holiday resort, not a curiosity. It was a living, evolving world, and there were folk down below to whom that world was everything that Old Earth had once been to the Human race. Protection. Mother. Home. |
(The Dark Wheel, Chapter 1) |
Imprint
Leesti features reasonably prominently in Imprint, the novel which came with some of the later versions of Classic Elite. Set circa 20 years before Oolite.
- As the indicator in the Translocator settled on the requested level and the slight pressure of deceleration set itself against his body, Hood stood up from the smooth grey seat and felt a three joint click. Aware of his body again he caught the tension gripping his back, the taut curve from his neck to his shoulders. A conscious effort to relax left a ghastly ache in his muscles, now malleable in a lingering mould of stiffness that had set as he had made his way towards GalCop licensing.
- The complex was in the anterior of Station 3 orbiting Lave. Each Lavean Station had a perpetual stream of would-be pilots and, currently, a waiting-list for appointments. He was renting a small resunit and, apart from a brief visit to Ashoria, Lave's primary colonial city, on the shuttle, he had been on the Station for two weeks; ten whole days, passing the time. The wait had been made all the worse by the knowledge that he had a Mark III Cobra berthed in the Station, waiting for him whilst he awaited his licence.
- The doors opened and he gazed out across jade floor tiles to the cleon foyer doors. Aligned vertically at their centre, and spreading up and across the access in a sweep of majesty, was the Golden GalCop symbol; RA the Robotic Avian, fixing him with a benign and impregnable stare from holocast eyes. Above its feathered helm, across the lintel, was the complex title; 'GalCop Space Licensing Authority'.
- Hood stepped out, amongst the green pools under soft pillars of light falling from the ceiling, light- headed from the adrenaline coursing in response to the furious pounding of his heart. He could feel this moment, a turning point in his life as sure as the Station pivoted in geostationary above the green world below. Today was the culmination of his life thus far, the effort he had put in at an Anlama ground Station, 15 light years and a life-style away.
- In the foyer beyond he could see numbers of people; their only common bond the Space and Interstellar Pilot Exam, waiting for the doors to the Issuing Hall to open for Licence Registration. As Hood approached, the foyer doors responded in silence. RA parted, a shimmering shedding of skin, for the image was replicated, emblazoned behind the reception desk, just beyond. There was no accounting for the ingenuity of the GalCop Design Section when it came down to their perceived integrity of the GalCop mantle, corporate wholeness unblemished.
- "Card"; demanded the figure behind the desk. Paying more attention to his surroundings than the officer, Hood held out his GCID card and waited whilst his appointment was confirmed. "Wait in the foyer until you are called please". It seemed something of a understatement, but whilst Rif Hood felt a pang of annoyance that his moment of achievement was a passing occupational chore to the figure before him, who was already turning back to a comm screen, it could not deflate his anticipation.
- "Thanks", he retorted as he began to head in the direction of the foyer...
- Some attempt had been made to arrange the seating into small, sociable, areas. Soft uplighters glowed from behind lush Lavean planting, with Station comma-units to hand. No connection made, the screen that Hood sat next to operated a free-space run of adverts between general Station announcements. 'Celebrate as a licensee at the Balcony Complex' was followed by 'The Lave Orbit Space Authority: Trading Profile Seminar. Call on C43-97T28 for your competitive advantage'. Hood watched for a while, unwilling to make eye contact and possibly have to engage in conversation with the eight people in his seating enclave. (Chapter 2)
- The Station docks ran in levels behind the free-space at station-core. Beyond and below the Station egress gaped planetwards, powerful shields operating a safety vortex both for, and against, traffic in the tubes. In a honeycomb of wedges behind the dockside were the cargo warehouses where a specialised transport network supported the auto-trading system. Autoscam modules plied their intermediary trade along these routes. The life-cycle of the Station was a peculiar one. The docks never grew still and the Station authorities were active even when sections of the Station with something approaching a diurnal routine fell quiet as they moved darkside...
- There were a number of available security checks which the pilot could use in the activation process. Hood had a basic palm scan and code-entry at present, which quickly brought the array of instrumentation alive. He brought up the Orbital Space Authority Data Link on the Comms Console and left the latest flight and docking information running on the local view screen. A matrix showed Hood's Cobra in perspective of the docked complement at Dock 4 where standard information would show berthed time, whether loading or unloading, ship to ship contact data and various local statistics. Watching the data flow, Hood felt insecurity gnawing at his thoughts again, fear of trying and finding mediocrity, the burden of insignificance, he looked at the small code for his berth, tangled in the midst of 400 berths on Dock 4 (Chapter 3).
- Lave's rich and fertile plains were a renowned source of protein extract (Chapter 4).
- ... they had met up in another bar of the Sans Serif complex next to a pool, separated by a screen of cleon that curved up and partly over the seating area so that a variety of Lavean fish swam in front of, and above them... They had laughed, drank and watched some of Lave's more peculiar forms of aquatic life scuttle around the tank. (Chapter 9).
- The Navy wanted to make the registration as Elite into a special presentation. As one of the Arazaen Senators, OSA, GalCop and Naval authorities gathered for the presentation, ... away from the purple uniforms to a corner near the RA symbol in the main Naval Briefing room... "I've still got to go to Lave if I want to register officially. Can you believe it?'... (Chapter 13).
Status Quo
According to Status Quo by Drew Wagar, Lave was the setting to a threatening, near-battle situation between Navy, Federation and Imperial fleets over the prior incident in Zaonce.
A major component of the Galactic Navy was stationed in orbit around the moon of Lave.
Four retrofitted military Anacondas, twelve military Asps and two full squadrons of Vipers, eight apiece. A few short kilometres across space were two other fleets. The Federation fleet was composed of six military specification Puma transports, heavily beweaponed with their new turret mounted military lasers. These were accompanied by their new fighter class ships, the Falcons and the Hawks. Ten of each, arranged in a wall formation. The Imperial fleet was no less imposing. |
(Status Quo, Chapter 7) |
A short time later it was the second system where a Q-Bomb was ignited - in the middle of a battle against a Thargoid invasion fleet.
The unleashed fury of the Quirium Cascade reaction burst forth. A terrifying wave of blue fire spun out into space, the Thargoid mothership was directly in the path.
It wasn’t destroyed immediately on contact; it was too big for that. The blue fire bit into the ship, bolts of lightning cascading around the hull, striking deep within it. Gradually sections of the ship emitted their own blue cascades until the entire length of it was a mass of flaming blue and white energy. |

Routes and Regions
Spaceways L1 and L2
Lave is the starting point of Spaceway L1 and Spaceway L2. Both pass over Zaonce as the next step to Aronar, where they split into the Xexedi loop of the L1, and the L2 which continues to its terminal point Zadies.
The Old Worlds
Lave is the heart of The Old Worlds.
The Old Worlds consist of Reorte, Lave, Diso, Riedquat, Leesti, Zaonce, and Orerve
Rough Guide
The Rough Guide to the Ooniverse also has a very good entry on Lave.
What can we say about Lave? Everyone knows Lave. We all trained there. The outlines of her continents are burned into our brains, from endless hours above them doing our jumps-and-bumps. Close your eyes and you’ll see them still: the arc of Crater Bay; the juts and jags of the Fenric coast; the curling comma Suther makes, creeping over the horizon into the short Laveian night. Many of us dropped down the well to Port Arcadia, and spent too much money, and might still have the faded Et In Arcadia Ego t-shirts to show for it. Been, seen, done: now we’re up and out and we’re never going back. |

The Traders Almanach
When cash matters more than cargo capacity, I give you this advice: You can't make a mistake with buying Lavese bacons here. You've got the choice to move them to Zaonce with a good plus of 80 to 90%, with Leesti being the second choice in destinations and Orerve last. Of lately, there have been piracy reports from Orerve.
Ahh, good old Lave, starting point for the ambitions spacer! I still remember my first launch in my good old Cobra... |
