Pioneer does for Frontier (Elite #2) what Oolite does for Classic Elite.
Overview
While the two projects would seem to be quite unconnected, there are a people who have written OXPs for Oolite and who have also contributed to Pioneer (such as Keeper).
The three great differences between the two might seem to be
1) Newtonian modelling for Frontier/Pioneer
2) Our human-raced single universe dominated by three political powers (Federation, Empire & Alliance) in Frontier/Pioneer vs Oolite's unstable GalCop spread around the Eight with lots of Species.
3) 20+ Pioneer mods vs 1100+ oxp's for Oolite
But there is of course rather more.
Pioneer features a richer universe with binary stars, black holes etc. You can land at proper starports on the planets, and the cities are built up. You can also dock in the stations.
There is interaction (however vestigial) with the various employees/people at the starports.
Oolite's oxp's provide missions which are stories, and political systems which have been differentiated from each other. There are ships with "character" (see Refugee Adder) as well as a dazzling array of equipment. One can manage a rock hermit, one can lead a guerilla force, there are all sorts of tweaks to the trade system.
