Black Hole OXP.png

Experimental & unfinished OXP

Overview

Phkb has finally thrown together a Black Hole OXP for Oolite. It is unfinished:

This will add a "Black Hole" a really long way out in every system. Please note: there is no gameplay in this demo (ie gravitational changes, proximity dangers, time skewing etc). It's just a tech demo. If someone wants to play around a bit more, they are welcome to grab with demo and run with it.

Littlebear has incorporated these Black Holes into his Galactic Almanac OXP (see BB Thread below).

History of Black Hole OXPs

The first to have a stab at this was Charlie who discussed it here in 2006, but nowadays there is a black hole in his Black Hole in his Box account!

After that, there was more rumination over the years - including this on one-way travel between the Eight galaxies:

Cody's Theory:

Eight small globular clusters co-orbiting a dormant Super Massive Black Hole (SMBH), the proximity of which dictates how one can travel between octants.

Stranger's Codicil to Cody's Theory

It is hard to imagine such an arrangement in common space - a SMBH must be extremely huge to prevent ripping stellar clusters with tidal forces. But if we assume a fast-spinning SMBH with a passable wormhole in witchspace, connecting eight distant regions... hmm, it can explain the one-way Galactic Hyperdrive route!

i.e. The direction of spin determines the direction of travel within The Eight. See: Cody (2020)

But nobody really did anything much until phkb unleashed this demonstration oxp.
