Long considered a mystery ship, the Salamander eventually physically emerged as a tangible spacecraft.
Overview
While the Salamander was for several years shrouded in complete mystery, and accounts by unreliable witnesses were so obviously spurious that even its name came into doubt, the truth did eventually emerge. Lerelace shipbuilders Ace & Faber, while by all appearances were doing fair with the output of their serviceable Gecko, were privately envious of the success that Cowell & MgRath had found with the steadily increasing demand of the Cobra Mk III, and obsessed with creating a ship that would surpass it in performance and popularity.
This obsession lead to a few poor business decisions, among them choosing regrettable financial partners, which resulted in the confiscation of the near finished prototype by an unsavoury, clandestine and unnamed, financial syndicate, and it remained hidden for several years. The ship itself was only rarely activated when taken out by the overindulged children of said syndicate bosses, which lead to the sporadic reports of sightings.
Years passed, and eventually Ace & Faber swallowed their pride, accepted their due humiliation as they took on new controlling partners, paid their exorbitant debts to the syndicate, and were ultimately squeezed out of their dream project. The ship was finally completed for public release, but old Ace & Faber were nowhere to be seen to enjoy the modest success that followed, which was widely deemed to be acceptable, considering how they had themselves played dirty in the outset of their careers.
