Anguis Primus by Ryan Hoots is the first novella in the Anguis Saga, released June 4, 2011.
It can downloaded at this link. Or this one.
Prologue Josh Tyley stood in a room looking out giant plexiglass windows over eight inches thick. On the other side an engine, secured down to the concrete floor, was warming up for its first test. The new engine was a prototype that should be able to go much faster than standard engines, maybe even the speed of Witchdrive Fuel Injectors, without using the Witchdrive Fuel. Such an engine would be incredible, thought Josh, If it works. An automated voice announced over speakers in the room, “Thirty Seconds to test time.” Soon we will find out. Josh watched the engine, and as soon as the times ticks down to zero, he flips a switch on the engine’s control panel, activating it. He slowly turned the knob controlling acceleration, and soon the engine is on full power. Just then John Robert walked in, and says, “Sorry I’m late, my ship was attacked by pirates. Is it working?” “Seems to be,” Josh says, “The control panel indicates that if it was on a Cobra Mk. III it would be going .5 LM.” “That’s wonderful, for the first prototype!” “And it’s smaller then a standard engine, too!” As they watch the engine, neither of them notice a third figure enter the room... and take the plans for the prototype engine. Agent Fortis was flying away in his highly modified Cobra Mk. III when his employer called him on the secure radio. “Did you get all three plans, Fortis?” he asked. The agent reyplyed, “Yes, the plans are here. A fast engine, Thargoid lasers, and a powerful shield generator.” “Good, you will be paid well.” I sure hope so, Maximus. That reward will pay for my own Dodecahedron station, Fortis thought with a smile on his face.
