Tiger Trader Mark2 Background
Tiger Trader MK II
Thank you for your interest in the background story about the Tiger Ship line by Joist Industries. Below you can also find more details about the predecessor Tiger ship developed by Cyber System.
As Cyber System scraped the design only few information about the old Tiger ship could be found. Due to risen demand from traders for a versatile but not as big ship as a python to be able to easier defend it. Due to their large connections they were able to get one of the Tiger ships. To be able to cover the research costs they decided to enter the design contest the new trader ship.
To reduce the cost while still maintaining a good ship and to make it more wide spread available Joist System won the price for their redesigned modern variant of the old Tiger. Maybe this was a bit unfair due to the fact that they were well-known for their excellent product quality. Due to the short time-frame though they had to come up with several compromises.
Especially the drive of the old tiger was not technically reproduceable by Joist in the short amount of time for their prototype. With the available informations they were able to still create a stunnable drive matching the speed of a faster trading-optimized Cobra. Due to the mass of the ship (about 1/3 more compared to the old model) it's flying capabilities are reduced.
As with the drive the energy banks are very close to one of the common modern types found in other ships. This also is one of the reason of the mass increase (leading to a bit bigger ship design but also to upgradable improvements). For a possible cargo bay extension many parts of the old combat system have been carefully redesigned in this ship, mainly less missle pylons.
Due to the usage of many modern components in the ship only high tech worlds are able to provide the needed ship service. Thus the shipyards of these worlds got the design for mass production.
Some years later Joist presented an upgraded variant of the Tiger with many improved combat possibilities, a slimmer design but reduced cargo capacity. Unfortunately some rich pirates especially got some of these models in their hands now forming a fearsome threat to even experienced fighters. Due to the modular design not only for standard equipment but for many parts of the ship the Galactic Navy likes to use these ships for themselves. A contract lead to several design parts specifications being disclosed from the public. These parts are delivered by the Navy to the shipyards as black boxes so the ship can still be bought by Joist customers (probably with reduced power compared to the navy ships).
One of the reasons the price was won is the new Tiger HUD provided by Joist... (to be continued)
