Game versions Classic (Elite 2))

The Cougar or Cat was an extremely elusive ship designed by Ian Bell that appeared in the BBC Master and 6502 Second Processor versions of Elite (which Bell has referred to as Elite 2) and the Commodore 64. No reason is given for the duality of names, Bell only writes that "the Cougar can be found as the "Cat" on the BBC Elite 2 ship sources disk."

The ship's elusiveness was due to the extremely low spawning probability in the game loop's spawning routine, set at 0.011%, a 1 in 9000 ship spawnings.
