Lave's moon is a curious object. It appears to be a small rock/ice planetoid, approximately 1000 km in diameter.

It was located at a distance of approximately 20 AU's from the primary star in 3135. It's orbital components indicated that it had come from the general direction of the Lave system Oort Cloud, however, previous astrometric searches had failed to pick it up. Historical searches also provide no prior indication of Lave's Moon in the region from where it was predicted to have come from.

It does not always appear on sensor scans, and some commanders have even reported it to flicker and vanish before their eyes. If these events do occur, they have never been recorded however.

Estimations of the mass of the moon are difficult to assess as different results have been obtained by different methods, and in some cases different results have been obtained using the same method. There is evidently some peculiar mechanism at work as the orbit of the moon is unstable, despite many attempts to regulate it.

The magnetic field of the moon is particularly strong, with a notable dead spot above the north magnetic pole. Automated probes that have approached this spot have been found to malfunction and loose contact with their controllers. Two tradeships were reported lost over the site in 3140 and the area has been off-limits to all shipping since.

These anomalies have never been fully explained.

The people of Lave, never ones to miss an opportunity, have adjusted the orbit elliptically, in order to harvest hydrogen from their Sun and a collection of hydrogen processing plants now adorns its surface.

Some have predicted that the moon is unstable and may destroy itself in a few short years due to the orbital instability. If this occurs, there may be serious ramifications for the Lave System.
