The universe

The universe is made up of sectors, each sector is essentially a cube of space containing several star systems. If you are used to various Elite maps which show depth as a vertical line extending to the object, then you should have no trouble reading the Ulite system map.

The sectors are arranged as a two dimensional array. So while the universe does have some depth to it, it's essentially two dimensional. Sectors are usually referenced by their coordinates in the universe surrounded by square brackets, eg. sector [4, -7].

Each star system contains a sun. It may also contain one or more planets (as well as the occasional asteroid belt).

Space stations may be located on or in orbit around planets.

How to play

Players start out with a very basic ship and some credits. There is no risk of being attacked until you begin accepting missions (see The Missions section of the Ulite: Documentation page).

Firstly, you can earn credits and some flight related skills just by trading between systems. Once you have enough credits, check for more advanced ships available within your skill range and also buy better equipment. By this point it should safe to begin seeking out missions. Missions introduce you to combat which allows you to develop the skills you'll need to pilot larger ships.

Tips for newbies

Considering it's unlikely anyone would read all the help information before they start playing, here's some helpful features and points to get you started. As you progress in the game you should return to the documentation from time to time for additional details. There is also a Ulite community forum available.

  • There's some features to ensure you don't die and lose your ship after accepting missions which are too difficult. 10 military points and 10 kills are required to accept harder missions and you'll never lose your ship until you've made 20 kills. After 100 kills you'll need to buy your own escape capsule or risk permadeath.
  • Poorly planned equipment and ship changes don't cost you anything to reverse until you've gained a reasonable level of experience.
  • Accept only a few missions at a time, even with newbie protection you can become overwhelmed by too many enemies if you're not careful.
  • When the riskier missions become available such as cargo transport and escort missions, be aware that the enemies will be much stronger than those of parcel and passenger transport missions.
  • Only approach inhabited systems.
  • Check the skill requirements before purchasing any new weapons or ships.
  • Join an alliance early, they can really help you out.

The professions

During registration, you are asked to select a profession. These professions only determine your starting skills. There is no further impact or limitations on skill progression based on profession for the remainder of the game thereafter.
