Flavour for non-human systems.

Overview
112 of the 256 systems in Galaxy 1 are dominated by one of the eight non-human species. This .oxp starts to give them a little flavour, starting with the terms used to refer to the stations (eg feline "exchange stations", humanoid "starports") and the communications from those stations.

Detail
v 0.2 incorporates a script that will send messages from non-human stations and beacons. These messages sometimes reference ideas that are not yet implemented. It also contains music by P.A. Groove / Blurred Vision for which he kindly granted permission.

Rather than spam the player with constant messages they're currently set to mean that you might only receive more than a few if waiting in a docking queue. There is a fair amount of humour (YMMV - your mileage might vary) contained within and at least two truly awful (but mercifully rare) jokes. Any lines not to the users taste can easily be removed/replaced by editing the descriptions.plist.

My favourite is perhaps the lobsters. I'm not quite sure what mental state I was in when I was writing that stuff but I'm glad I captured it in some form!

Gameplay
This oxp will also restrict system entry in some cases. There will always be a way in but someinhabitant groups will make it much more difficult to visit their systems compared to others.

The basic idea is that in order to reach a system a ship's hyperdrive must communicate with the target systems witchpoint beacon, meaning that entry can potentially be refused. GalCop may be rather lax in this regard but some of the minority groups within are much stricter. This is especially true with regards to groups that they would regard as alien and of such groups especially when it concerns humans. Of course, if the signal were in some way to be manipulated...

Disclaimer
This oxp deliberately plays with stereotypes. The stereotypes relate to the animal types in question and, although flavoured by the authors real experiences around stereotyping, no inhabitant type is meant to represent any real group of people or combination of such. Wishing to foster intergroup tensions within a fictional setting and (especially) between fictional groups is in no way an expression of a wish to promote such in real life. If any comment is intended at all then it is only to satirise such thinking. The chief goal however, is amusement: firstly my own and secondly (perhaps) that of anyone who gives it a try.

Plans
The new title is chosen to better represent the expanded scope of what the .oxp will hopefully eventually encompass. This oxp has been brewing since 2016, and there are many ideas for it which have yet to be achieved. These ideas include:
*Different titles for the stations which depend on the inhabitant group (see above).
*Distinct stations for each inhabitant group (i.e. birds, felines, frogs etc.)
*Different commodity preferences which are species-specific (and restricted goods, too)
*Unique shipyards
Redspear has stated that his overall philosophy is to make gameplay more enjoyable - and to avoid unneeded complexity.

OXPs
Be aware that in some cases Redspear placed a major essay in his threads explaining the justification for eg Re-imagining Laser Combat or Redistributing traffic.

Ambience (done with collaborators: Spara etc)
*Additional Planets SR Base	Redspear, Spara, PHKB The in-game mechanism providing the base for the following texture packs.
*Additional Planets Redux Pack	Redspear, Spara and collaborators Textures from the old Redux pack
*Additional Planets Demux Pack	Redspear, Spara and collaborators Textures from the old Demux pack
*Additional Planets SR Demux Volcanic Pack	Redspear, Spara and collaborators More Demux textures.
*Additional Planets SR Others Gas Giants pack	Redspear, Spara and collaborators
*Additional Planets SR: Alien Worlds	Redspear, Spara and collaborators
*Additional Planets SR: Earthlike	Redspear, Spara and collaborators
*Additional Planets SR: free bitmaps dusty	Redspear, Spara and collaborators
*Additional Planets SR: free bitmaps icy	Redspear, Spara and collaborators
*Additional Planets SR: free bitmaps rocky	Redspear, spara and collaborators
*Additional Planets SR: Ocean Worlds	Redspear, Spara and collaborators

Equipment & Weapons
*Laser Combat Reimagined: pulse laser gets longer range, several new laser types, not all ships can carry all lasers.
*Missile Combat Reimagined: fragile ECMs & 4 types of missile
*New lasers 21 new lasers: availability depends on which species inhabits the planet!
*Tech Shuffle: increases TL at which fuel, cargo bay extensions and ECM are bought, thus changing early gameplay
*Weapon Laws means that the government system now affects availability (not just the TL)

Mechanics
*Cargo Scoop as Standard (note: cargo scoop not fuel scoop!)
*Equipment by Ship Class: Size of ship, tech level and grade all affect equipment performance
*Equipment by Ship Role: Role of ship determines the extra equipment it might have
*Escape Pod As Standard
*Galactic Hyperdrive Reimagined: a rechargeable Galactic Hyperdrive (by scooping the fuel)
*Hyperdrives: size, tech level & equipment (eg the EEU) all affect countdown time & maximum distance of witchspace jumps
*Indestructible Injectors
*Masslock Compensator: passive (neutral) masslocks are less inhibitory than active (combative) masslocks.
*Masslock Reimagined: Redspear's 4th Masslock-solving OXP - his "piece de resistance"!
*Power To Engines: 50% speed boost when weapons are off-line
*Star Fuel: speed bonus for fuel scooped from larger stars
*Traffic Redistributer: changing the speeds of different ships helps reduce mass-lock

Recommendations
When not talking about himself in the third person, Redspear likes to include some of his own recommended oxps in the 'signature' of his bulletin board posts. These are all oxps maintained by him and so he's well placed to understand how they interact.

The prospective user is encouraged to investigate (via the links) any that might be of interest prior to downloading. Some of his oxps are largely cosmetic, others make much more significant changes to the game which won't be for everyone. They should however all 'play nicely' together in any combination that the user sees fit.

Ships
*Lightspeeder: a sleeker, faster, Fer-de-Lance
*Fighter-Explorers: adds modified versions of the Krait and Mamba that have hyperdrives but only a pulse laser by default.
*Jane's Galactic Shipset: resizes and reattributes core shipset based on primary Classic Elite sources. In many cases changes one or more of mass, speed, energy, recharge, missiles, cargo, pitch and roll statistics.

Systems
*Demand Driven Economy: new profitable runs which involve other commodities than just furs and computers
*Paddling Pool: Turns the Leesti - Diso milk run into a much safer route for the beginning player.
*Alien Systems OXZ: Accentuates differences between systems dominated by differing species (felines, avians, etc).

Experimentation
Redspear has been working with Diziet Sma in trying to rescale the sizes in Oolite to come out with something that is more realistic - but also playable.
*See Rescaling experiment for a description of the issues
*See Discussion thread on the BB with links to his code for compiling

Species
A persistent trend in Redspear's thinking over the years has been one of weaving in the differences in the species into Oolite gameplay:
*Redspear has been working on Alien Systems OXZ for some years now
*He has also been interested in possible impacts on trade routes:
[[File:Redspear's Trade-Species Diagramme.png|thumb|left|800px|Musings on Species & Trade (2017)]]

Player progression based upon elite ranking.

Overview
Instead of credits being the main measure of player progression, this OXP requires a certain number of kills to have been accrued in order to unlock various ships and equipment items.

Under pressure from the Elite Federation's ranking system, GalCop felt it necessary to reward suucessful combateers, lest they move to less trade oriented behaviours and weaken the intersystem trade GalCop is built upon. GalCop's pre-existing Pilot Licence was therefore adapted to recognise elite Federation ranks and to offer commensurate rewards to the holder upon reaching each rank.

Whilst it's true that the highest ranks also grant access to some of the more militarily capable vessels, without this concession it was feared that many experienced pilots would be swayed to trade (or otherwise offer their services) elsewhere.

Detail
Starting in a humble Adder, and with a lowly GalCop designation of 'Trainee 3rd Class', each time the player achieves a new combat rank then new oportunities are opened up to them. At first this will merely be access to some new pieces of equipment but later on it will also include access to more capable ships. All of this will still require credits, just as it did before, however the pricing gradient for the relevant ships has been altered in order to better suit this new formalised progression path.

Speeds and (in one case) energy banks have also been adjusted in order that each new ship offer a clear and significant upgrade over the last:
*Adder @ 0.24LM (no adjustment)
*Cobra Mk I @ 0.26LM (no adjustment)
*Moray @ 0.28LM (-0.2LM)
*Cobra Mk III @ 0.3LM (-0.05 to player version of ship)
*Fer de Lance @ 0.35LM (+0.05LM)
*Asp Mk II @ 0.4LM (no adjustment)

As per the Elite Space Trader's Flight Training Manual (and as of v1.2 of this oxp), the Adder that the player starts in comes with a beam laser rather than the pulse laser of a typical Cobra Mk III start.

Redspear: Updated to reflect v 0.2 and especially to credit P.A.Groove for the music added by the new version.

Gameplay and Balance Indicator
At the moment (1st Jan '23), this oxp is pure flavour and does not affect gameplay. Just wait!... still true as of March '24 but working on it :-P
Rejigging the Trade model according to the Space Traders Flight Training Manual: Think about a planet's needs. Think what might make the society function. Don't trade expensive trivia to a hungry world

Overview
The basic idea is to keep the reliability of the standard trade model but not the monotony.

The Vanilla game model means that some items are always more profitable than others as long as you are trading in the right direction between the industrial & agricultural poles.

For example: not only are computers always more expensive than machinery but they are also always more profitable trade items than machinery. The problem then is that there is no good reason to buy machinery when computers are available.

This model assigns each of the 8 economy types a specific high-demand commodity. Population, productivity and tech level also exert some influence.

For example: computers still cost more than machinery but when shipping to a mainly agricultural or poor agricultural system they will not be as profitable. The result is that at least sometimes the trader would now buy machinery in preference to computers.

Economy Type and Most Profitable Import
*Rich Industrial - furs
*Average Industrial - liquor/wines
*Poor Industrial - textiles (was food until v.1.2)
*Mainly Industrial - radioactives
*Mainly Agricultural - machinery
*Rich Agricultural - luxuries
*Average Agricultural - computers
*Poor Agricultural - alloys

It is of course quite possible to argue over which commodity should go where and why but it's a simple matter to edit the oxp to one's own tastes (if you don't know how, just ask).

Further musings of the what, where, why variety can be found here.

Population, productivity and tech level also exert some influence, along with a dash of randomisation, but the above table should remain very reliable if not infallible.

Version 1.3 now available from the download manager.
Tips
To make a profit, ship an agricultural commodity to an industrial system or vice versa.

'Agricultural' goods (extracted/harvested): textiles, radioactives (mined ores), liquor/wines, furs

'Industrial' goods (processed/manufactured): alloys, machinery, computers, luxuries

Some will make more money than others depending upon which economy type you ship them to. Generally speaking, the richer the economy, the more expensive its tastes and the more it will pay over the odds for them.

The other goods are either very cheap, legally controlled or available in smaller quantities than 1TC. Credits can be made shipping them here and there but that said, each of them is in particular demand by multi-gov, feudal and anarchy systems. The more insular or hazardous the system is the more it is likely to crave basic goods such as food and 'workers' or means of 'control' such as firearms.

So there are three (informal) 'levels' of trade, from the fairly ignorant to the savvy
*Trader: ship any agricultural item (from any agri market) to any industrial system or vice versa (likely profit: low)
*Merchant: as 1 but ship it to the right system (likely profit: medium)
*Blockade Runner: ship a very particular item to a rather dangerous system (likely profit: high)

Alien items are currently the 'odd commod' but will later either be integrated into either this oxp or into another that I'm working on.

Hints:

Check the f7 screen - Remember, it's about what they demand more than it's about what they supply
Richer systems generally pay more for more expensive stuff
Ship agricultural to industrial and industrial to agricultural (both in terms of systems and goods) and you should always make something

Personal notes
This is my take on the basic trade model inherited from elite.

Why not Supply AND demand?
:Because I wanted to keep the standard scenario of the player typically having more than one viable trade option within jump range. Therefore choice, strategy and (often) convenience all exist from the outset.

Disclaimer: I'm new to tinkering with markets and so my coding is likely clunky and sub-optimal, almost certainly with anti-social behavioural issues when it comes to integrating with other oxps. I hope to be able to address any such issues as they arise.

Resizes and reattributes core shipset based on primary Elite sources. In many cases changes one or more of mass, speed, energy, recharge, missiles, cargo, pitch and roll statistics.

Rescaling
This is the first published oxp in the Rescaling experiment, and focuses purely on the ships for the Vanilla game.

Analysis
The chart to the right shows the resizing of the ships:
:If they are smaller than before then you can see them within the shadow representing their old size.
:If they are larger than before then you can see them next to the shadow representing their old size.

The ships are all rescaled around the Anaconda and station sizes remain unchanged. The nature of the original material (Bell, Braben, Holdstock) is sometimes contradictory and so freeing the ship sizes from their stated dimensions was done in order to find their likely (relative) sizes. So for example, how likely is it that a 'one man fighter' (krait) would be wider than the 'biggest known freighter' (anacoda)?

Volume has been calculated using data sumarised in the table below. Listed attributes have been taken from the sources listed below under Links.

Release Notes
*v1.2 includes the full 750TC Anaconda and scalable hyperdrive calculations
*v1.1 includes speed adjustment for installing the cargo bay extension (cobra mk III without: 0.35LM speed, cobra mk III with: 0.28LM)
*More to come, especially in terms of oxp compatability
*Warning: this will reduce the Cobra mk III's speed to 0.28LM.

This made sense to me when I first saw it in Angus Duggan's Elite-A (the fer-de-lance should be the faster of the two I thought) but I was surprised to find it in the C64 ship stats... Sure, there's the Masslock issue but there are several oxps to counter that, 3 of which I've written myself (with all of those being cumulative in effect).

Smaller ships will likely be harder to hit but more fragile than before.
Gameplay and Balance Indicator
By slowing down the Cobra MkIII (from 0.35 lm to 0.28 lm) the game becomes tougher for beginners. One can use some of Redspear's other OXPs to compensate: Masslock Compensator, Power To Engines and/or Traffic Redistributer. It is also true however that many non-player ships will be slower by default (as some will have the cargo bay extension installed by default).

The ships are all rescaled around the Moray (rescaling around the Moray only needs station sizes to increase by about 10%, a lot better than the 33% required if rescaling was based around the Cobra Mk III.). This has been done treating the Elite Manual dimensions (which are in imperial feet) as though they were the longer european metres.
